Scottish Property Awards 2014, The Birks Cinema, Aberfeldy

Robin Baker Architects were delighted to receive the Highly Commended award in the Town Centre Regeneration category at the Scottish Property Awards 2014.

The restored Art Deco cinema, located at the corner of the main town square, has brought new life into the town centre and is encouraging visitors and new investment to the town.

The award is recognition of the achievement of a small but active group within the town of Aberfeldy who were inspired by Charlotte Flower, a local chocolatier who founded the Friends of the Birks Cinema, to donate their time to further the social and economic development of the town.

Robin Baker said that the renovation of the derelict cinema, that was on the Civic Trust Buildings at Risk Register, is a prime example of a community led town centre regeneration project as expounded in the Scottish Government National Review of Town Centres 2013 to make the best use of existing resources to enliven our town centres with a new sense of community and enterprise.

Cinema Patron, Mr Alan Cumming returned to Scotland to officially open the Birks Cinema

Giving the evening gowns and tuxedos a quick brush, just a week later from the exciting DIA Awards Gala, we were delighted to host our Cinema Patron, Mr Alan Cumming who returned to Scotland to officially open the Birks Cinema.

To see the press coverage from the event please follow the link below

With events like this, happening in less than a year since the door were finally opened to the public, it makes it hard to wish for more. It’s been a story of success, showing how one can inspire the whole community and with some good effort and elbow grease can bring the life back to a devastated building turning it into a social hub. And now after it is up and running we would like to thank everyone who gave their heart and good wishes, hoping that you will stay with us to celebrate many more exciting events that are about to come. Thank you.
