BIRKS CINEMA GROUP NEEDS YOU

- group to establish trading company
- appeal for volunteer board members

With construction work on the new Birks Cinema kicking off this month,
the Friends of The Birks Cinema (FOBC) group has taken further steps
in getting ready to run the new community facility.

An Extraordinary General Meeting of the group was held on 30th April,
where it was unanimously agreed that a new trading company be formed.
An appeal has been made to the wider community and through the
'Friends' membership, for individuals to consider putting themselves
forward as voluntary Board Directors.

Charlotte Flower, Chair of FOBC, said: "We're making great progress.
As building works get underway, we want to make sure we get as many
local people involved as possible as we establish how the facility
will operate and be directed. We are now also creating the right
social enterprise structure to run the cinema efficiently and
effectively and to deliver the social benefits to the local community
which it will serve.

"We are appealing far and wide throughout the community to anyone who
thinks they have something to offer to the new board and new advisory
forums."

The kind of skills and experience being looked for include: marketing
and communications, business start-up, creative arts, connected to
community networks, catering industry, IT and Human Resources. This is
not an exhaustive list, and FOBC also wants to emphasise that a broad
range of backgrounds and interests will be important to form the
community input into the structure of the governance of the project -
not least enthusiasm and commitment - if individuals want to put
themselves forward regardless of skills and experience.

Applicants should outline briefly the skills, experience or knowledge
that they could bring which would help to make the cinema a successful
social and financial venture. Board members won’t receive any
financial remuneration – just the satisfaction of seeing the business
grow under their leadership. For further information please refer to

To register interest and to talk it through informally and without
commitment, please write by 7th June 2012 to:
